Under their cold and ruthless captain Douglas Jardine, England's fast bowlers, led by the Nottingham express bowler Harold Larwood, bowled bouncers at the Australian batsmen - Don Bradman in particular - and won the series 4-1.
But such was public outrage in Australia that the Englishmen's tactics were condemned even in political circles. Not only the cricket authorities but the governments of both countries were involved in urgent exchanges. There was an outside chance that Australia would withdraw from what was then known as the British Empire.
