Alec has been infatuated with Japan ever since he was a small boy. So when, after graduating from Yale, he gets the opportunity to work in Tokyo, it seems an ideal opportunity not only to fulfil a dream, but to distance himself from a ruptured past he would rather forget.
At first Alec struggles to master Japanese ways that are not always as they appear, but before long he finds trust and friendship with the family he stays with, with his hard-boiled American boss, and above all with Kiyoko Kawashima, a woman considered too old to be of interest to Japanese men but whose beauty overwhelms him. It is in the countryside with Kiyoko's beloved grandparents, far from fast-track Tokyo, that 'Bicycle Days' reaches it dramatic climax.
'Bicycle Days' is a graceful and moving novel about a young man's coming of age in a world as confusing as it is enticing.
