Over a long career, Bernard Manning was loved and loathed in equal measure. Some contemporary comedians really divide opinion and in his day, Bernard Manning did the same. But he always contended that he was not any of the things certain people accused him of. Born of Russian, Jewish and Irish descent he served in WW2 and at one point just after the war, was stationed at Spandau prison in Berlin, guarding Rudolph Hess.
