Second edition

Ben Nicholson (1894-1982) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A pioneer of abstract art in Britain, he first came to international prominence with his famous "white reliefs", and he continued to produce remarkable abstract reliefs and paintings through his career. At the same time, this complex and independent-minded artist always refused to be pinned down by labels, and he maintained a lifelong attachment to the visible world; many of his finest works are paintings, drawings and prints of landscape and still-life forms.

Norbert Lynton's subtle and perceptive study of Nicholson's life and work was the first full-length, comprehensive monograph on the artist. Celebrating the centenary of Nicholson's birth in 1994, it was originally published in a large edition with many supplementary illustrations, and was quickly recognised as an outstanding and authoritative volume.

The the second edition, this standard work is reissued in a shorted paperback format, without the supplementary illustrations but otherwise retaining the substance and essential character of the original publication. The text remains virtually unchanged, and some 180 key illustrations, nearly all in colour, present the full range of Nicholson's works. In this way, an important, comprehensive and richly illustrated monograph on one of the major artists of the century is made available to a new and wider audience.
