Siddhartha Gautama is said to have been born in what was then India but is now Nepal, in about 563 BC. Born a wealthy prince, he gradually gave up worldly ways until, at age thirty-five, he attained supreme enlightenment and became the Buddha.
With a foreword by the Dalai Lama, the story is beautifully illustrated with rich oriental style paintings of key stages in Siddhartha's life. An author's note at the end gives background information and is followed by suggestions on how to meditate from the Dalai Lama himself.
