Film designer Ned Nugent, disillusioned with Hollywood, returns to "real life" and the relative sanity of England. Yet no sooner has he arrived than he is picked up by the precocious and utterly delightful nymphet Lavender, who whisks him home to meet the family.
But the exotic Macnamara family are not quite what Ned imagined. There is Lavender's mother, Rose, who has made seduction her life's work; the dashing Aunt Tottie with her penchant for outrageous hats; and cousin Beth, who smells intriguingly of new mown hay and who soon represents everything about England that Ned holds dear. What Ned doesn't realise is that the Macnamaras are haunted by their past - and Beth is haunted by a panther . . .
