'Battlefield Britain' will span nearly 2,000 bloody and turbulent years of battles fought on British soil, from Boudicca’s uprising against the Romans in 61AD to the last battle fought on British soil at Culloden in 1746 and the Battle of Britain.
Linking in with an innovative 8-part television series – a major marketing event supported by English heritage – this accompanying book is written by one of our foremost foreign correspondents Peter Snow and his son, Dan Snow, a military historian.
Each of the eight chapters tell the story of a different conflict - the men who fought, the weapons, the tactics and the effect on our history. With recourse to the latest research as well as carrying out reconstructions of the battle, Peter and Dan raise such questions as "why were the troops fighting?" and "what was morale like?". As well as a dramatic narrative telling the story of each battle, there are ‘battle experience’ boxes where Peter and Dan try out a tactic used in the battle, finding out what it was like to stand behind a shield wall and face a cavalry charge, for example.
One hundred stunning images are included such as computer-generated battleplans to illuminate the crucial turning points of each battle. And constructed ‘photofits’ of the historical leaders of the battles bring to life such powerful men as William: son of a powerful Saxon dynasty, long-haired and handsome but ruthless to the core, he skinned enemies who taunted him with his humble origins in the tannery trade.
