The aim of this book is to promote the many sportsmen and women from Barnsley who, owing to the fact that they were born in a small northern industrial town, have not received the recognition they deserve. Many of those selected have enjoyed success on both a national and international level, in fields as diverse as football, cricket, swimming and weightlifting. But this is not just a statistical review of the many sporting achievements of the town, it also explores how and why our stars picked up their first football. In short, it offers a unique insight into the triumphs, failures, inspirations and sacrifices of Barnsley's best. AUTHOR: Nathan Hemmingham was once assistant sports editor to The Barnsley Chronicle, where he worked for seven years. During this time he followed the successes of the town's sports stars closely, and has a keen interest in Barnsley's sporting triumphs. 50 b/w photographs
