Besieged by pirates during the 16th and 17th centuries and ravaged by a succession of wars for the next two centuries, Baetulona endured a turbulent history, especially during the time of the bitter Spanish civil war. Only after the restoration of democracy in 1979 did this once-thriving Mediterranean centre begin to recover its Catalan identity and character. As a special tribute, 100 outstanding designers pay homage to the enduring spirit of Baetulona - each creative work shaping and colouring different events throughout its dramatic past. Proud of its rich Iberian and Romanic heritage, the city has steadily flourished and regenerated through time and was named capital of Catalan culture in 2010.
