Bob Santamaria was involved in Australian public life from before World War II until his death in 1998. His letters reveal facets of his personality and activities that the public was not fully aware of in his lifetime.
He began as an agent and champion of the Catholic Church, and was a key figure in Australian politics, namely the ALP-DLP Split in the 1950s. He also ran a lesser known anti-Communist Movement throughout Asia for decades, at the same time as his Australian Movement.
The political activist and journalist Santamaria spent much of his last decades opposing the current activities of the Catholic Church. Spanning more than sixty years, this selection of letters to friends and members of the public reveals a person more subtle in his views than his adamantine public persona would suggest. 'Your Most Obedient Servant' is a rare glimpse into a mind that was preoccupied on a daily basis with world events and ideological controversies.
