How has Australian women's position in society developed over the years? This collection of photographs shows the major part women have played in shaping Australia's history. Their role has not been limited to the private sphere of home and family: they have taken an active part in public life, the workforce and community welfare. Women from all social classes and each racial and ethnic group have contributed.
Here is the story of their own struggles to achieve and defend their equality and freedom, and to establish their rights as citizens of the nation which they helped to create. The pictures are explained with an introductory text, and supported by contemporary documents.
