Thousands of knights and footsoldiers are mustering in Venice for the launch of the Fourth Crusade. Among them is young Arthur de Caldicot, soon to be dubbed a knight. The crusade quickly falls into disarray: Christian turns on Christian, Saracens draw their scimitars, and Arthur experiences the full horror of war. Looking into his seeing stone, he realises that the exploits of King Arthur's knights are as grim as they are glorious and he wonders about his own life - his betrothal, his friendship with Gatty, his murderous father and his mother he dreams of finding.
