This selection of forty new and recent houses explores the creativity of top architectural firms around the world. Most so-called luxury homes are tract houses on steroids: dumb boxes with pretentious historicist trappings that strive to impress and to be contextual, but fail on both counts.
In contrast, the houses shown here are understated or audacious, but never conventional. They achieve greatness through harmony of proportion or daring leaps into space. Every house is one-of-a-kind, the product of dialogue between demanding clients and creative designers around the globe, including Archi-Tectonics/Winka Dubbeldam, Will Bruder, Wallace Cunningham, Gwathmey-Siegel, Steven Holl, Mecanoo in the Netherlands; Gilles Perraudin in France; and Brian Donovan, Glenn Murcutt, and Harry Seidler in Australia.
