An array of different animals played their part in the First World War - most famously the horses that took part in the last cavalry charges or hauled heavy guns, but also the pigeons that carried messages, dogs that sniffed out wounded soldiers, camels used as beasts of burden in desert warfare, and many more.
Apart from these animals that served on the frontline, such animals as ships' cats and even baby orang-utans acted as mascots that helped to boost and maintain morale among military units. This book examines the jobs that these animals did on land, in the air and at sea, and highlights the value of their contribution to the war effort.
