Arthur Snout is the 'Lonely Dog' - an orphan hound growing up in Alveridgea, where cats and dogs live alongside each other, but on very different sides of the tracks. Tucked inside an old boot and left on the steps of the Houndside orphanage, small (even for a pup), unhoundish, teased by the other houndlings because he keeps himself clean as a cat, Arthur doesn't look very special. Then one night 'Lonely' hears his first notes of the twangy houndskiffle, and knows deep down that his destiny can be discerned in that sweet mournful melody... But just as Lonely finally finds some soul mates - in Rolph Flannegan, his blues-playing headmaster, and a sweet houndette by the name of Kelzie - the other houndlings bundle him out of the orphanage in the dead of night, and leave him deep in Catside!
On the long journey home that ensues, Lonely realises that an underdog is never alone if he has a song in his heart and a guitar in his paws. No-one - not the kitterlings in Catside, not the Juke Hounds of the Shipwood Mountains, not the hobos on Reveller's Green, not the Howlers at Marvo's Bar - has ever heard anything like the Lonely Dog. The sound that will make Alveridgean History - the sound of a small dog with a big heart and plenty of soul!
