When Cerise Lindsay receives a cable with the news that her older sister, Madeleine, has drowned in a boating accident she leaves her promising career as a sculptress in Italy and returns home to England to find her family's affairs a mess and her sister's death not so accidental. She is joined her quest for answers by Blake Hargrove, the eighth Earl of Sandown. It was at his estate that Madeleine drowned and he feels somewhat responsible.
