London, 1913. At an avant-garde party Alice Fry meets Edward Cobb, the eligible son of a baronet, who has recently left the army to pursue his political ambitions.
They fall in love, but when Alice's father becomes involved in a sexual scandal, it becomes clear that Edward must choose between Alice and his political career. He breaks off their engagement, unaware that she is expecting their child.
At the Derby that year, Alice meets a charming Russian, Baron Rettenberg. He invites Alice to return to Russia with him to take charge of his children. Desperate, Alice concludes that exile is preferable to shame . . .
