Abandoned Castles - Most castles weren’t built just once, but were modified and expanded as the centuries passed and defensive needs changed. Over time, a Norman keep might have been joined by new storeys, towers, surrounding walls, moats, gates and drawbridges. Consequently, castles don’t usually tell us about a single moment in the past but about many different times. They offer us layers of history - and sometimes mystery too.
