This is the first selection from all Les Murray's prose to be published in Australia. It is named after the long autobiographical essay, 'In A Working Forest', included here. Readers familiar only with Murray as a poet might be surprised at the volume and quality of his prose. It ranges from brief and amusing occasional pieces to some of the wisest essays written in this country. The subjects include republicanism, religion, Antarctica, sexuality, the great divide between the bush and the city, and, of course, poetry.
