"The chronic toothache occurred only at night. It afflicted not only Fong Mun but the entire population of Luang Prabang: the peasants, the monks and the nuns, the royal families. Spasms of pain coincided with the sound of machine guns and cannons from the outskirts of town. But for the curfew the whole town would have flocked to the dentist and banged at his door
The Brothers occupied the northern part of Luang Prabang, up the Mekong River, the caves and historical sites that housed the beautiful statues of Buddha. The Brothers slept in the daytime and returned to attack at night. The highland traders on their way to town were often ambushed. Land mines were planted by both the royal army and the Brothers. So the toothache lasted for years, throughout the early seventies. New Year's and festivals became the anesthetic." - From A Thousand Wings
