Nicholas and Kate Latimer have a lovely cottage, three healthy children and twenty successful years of marriage to their credit, when their lives are thrown into confusion by a mid-life crisis of the most insidious kind. At 42 Nicholas suddenly feels as if he is hurtling towards a future that holds nothing better than a modest pension and the burden of caring for aged parents. That his elegant, vibrant wife enjoys having more time for her new career and the problems of her dashing bachelor brother than for her husband, does little to bolster Nicholas' disintegrating sense of self-worth.
Kate still cherishes her marriage but can't help relishing the almost forgotten luxury of having time to herself - and, increasingly, time away from her husband's relentless bad moods. The arrival in the village of the darkly enigmatic Max Urquart adds a fresh twist to Kate's predicament, providing a welcome but potentially fatal distraction to the problems she faces at home.
