St-Cyr and Kohler and hastily shipped from Paris to Avignon to investigate the violent death of a young woman. The dead girl is a scion of a long-fallen aristocratic family and scholar of medieval history. She is also a singer who was desperate to join the local madrigal group for whom she already designed and made the costumes.
Uncharacteristically, the case fills St-Cyr with fear and self-doubt, as he realises he must go back to the early Renaissance to solve the puzzle the victim left behind. And it is only after another death, and with the help of a complex coded journal, that they are able to discover the truth . . .
