January 1943. The naval war in the North Atlantic is at its deadliest, but the everyday crimes of murder, arson, theft and fraud continue to tax the overworked detectives St-Cyr and Kohler. A body has been found, covered by a shabby square of faded, wine-red sail cloth. The victim is a shopkeeper.
