When Lord Ambrose Malfine discovers that Elisabeth Anstruther is leaving him, he views their parting with foreboding. Elisabeth has taken up a post as companion to Lady Jesmond in a nearby West Country residence but, within days of her arrival, a young man, who is employed as Sir Jesmond's doctor, is poisoned to death.
At first it is assumed that the poor fellow has committed suicide, but no note is found and the stoppered bottle of acid, which he had poured down his throat, had been carefully replaced on his bedside table. Elisabeth knows that the one person capable of solving this mystery is Ambrose and it is not long before he too is embroiled in the sinister goings-on at Jesmond Place . . .
