It is 1917. Virginia Hewson is sixteen and so beautiful that Michael Gallagher, an Irishman fighting with the British Navy, falls in love with her on sight. The Hewson family is horrified but the young couple know their own minds and are set on marriage. Then Virginia has a baby - Stella Margaret - and when Michael returns from sea he takes one look at her and is convinced she is not his child.
