Set in Acker's Gap, nestled in Raythune County in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, a town surrounded by breath-taking natural beauty but ravaged by desperate poverty. Crime runs rampant and its inhabitants turn to drugs to take away the pain. Our lead, Bell, a 39 year old single mother-of-one, was born in the town but raised in foster homes following the death of her father at nine and the imprisonment of her sister. She left Acker's Gap, qualified to become a lawyer and returned with her daughter in order to try and help restore the town to its former glory. At the start of this novel, Bell's teenage daughter, Carla, is a witness to the deaths of three old men in the local fast food franchise, apparent victims of a randomless shooting and Bell becomes embroiled in the case.
