As an Australian police officer and freelance photojournalist, Brett Stevens travelled throughout the United States studying crime gangs in the early 1990s only to return to Australia and see the rise of the 'street soldier' back home in the 2000s. The writer makes it clear that while immigration does have an impact on the formation of street gangs, he explains more fully has the 'gang phenomena' swept through the United States and being replicated in Europe and Australia.
