LuLu has heard of the legendary bunyips and wants to see one. Her quest takes her amongst the ferny undergrowth by the creek at the bottom of her garden - "in the shining day and deep in moonlit night." But what do the bunyips look like? Has anyone ever seen them?
Just when LuLu is feeling that her quest is in vain, her grandfather becomes an unexpected ally, telling her how he saw the bunyips when he was little. Later he helps to usher her into their society when, at the conclusion of the tale, LuLu finds the bunyips dancing in the moonlight - her grandfather among them.
