The Native American people have a prophecy about the white buffalo calf -- a sacred bundle and a sacred peace pipe was brought to them about 2,000 years ago by a woman who they know as the White Buffalo Calf Woman. This is the primary goddess myth of the Plain Indian tribes.
According to Lakota Sioux legend, one summer long ago a beautiful young woman appeared among the Indians at a time when there was no game and people were starving. The woman initiated the into the way of the sacred pipe and taught them how to use it to pray. She told the Sioux about the value of the buffalo. The legend says that before the woman left them, she promised her return and prophesised that the birth of a white buffalo calf would be a sign of her coming again to purify the world and bring back harmony and spiritual balance to the world. As she walked away she turned into a young white buffalo and they named her White Buffalo Woman.
In 'Eyes of Wisdom', Heyoka Merrifield, internationally acclaimed artist, author, and medicine man brings this myth to life with an enchanting story based on this ancient legend. He tells the tale of Owl, the young man who first met White Buffalo Woman. As the sacred pipe unfolds the spiritual nature of his tribe, Owl becomes apprentice to Grandmother Eyes of Wisdom. Drawing from several versions of the legend of White Buffalo Woman, as well as from his own experiences in the Sun Dance lodge and his vision quests, Heyoka offers a touching narration of life and ceremony on the plains, richly woven with Native American tradition and other mythic themes. He also brings to the story how the Native people worshiped the sacredness of nature in all their daily actions.
