Brian dips the back wheel of his bike in the Pacific, and heads out to cross the continental United States through the Northern tier of Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.
His trip is a fantastic adventure through the wonderous landscape of the USA and the violence and beauty of seasons and storms as they pass across the land. He meets a wide range of characters, from the charmed friend who leads him across the Continental Divide, to the old farm wife squinting against a lifetime of prairie winds, to the Born Again beauty in the farmlands of the Midwest.
Through it all, Brian is looking for solace in his failed relationship with his father, a love frought with disapproval, and a connection to the God he was raised with and has lost. These concerns trail Brian across the country , so that he emphasizes visits with different kinds of religious communities, and in doing so shows us the many faces of faith in our country.
