For fifty years, Judith Wright and Barbara Blackman were fond friends. Their letters record a lively conversation between two equally strong women writers, who both relished the play and beauty of words, and whose first and most powerful link was through poetry. Their correspondence encompassed lovers, husbands, children, books, art, writing, music, politics, gardens and travel. There is joy and sadness, chaos and loneliness, success and failure, philosophy and gossip.
The written word, the letter form, suited both women. Judith's increasing deafness made letter writing her preferred means of communication with friends. Barbara's deteriorating eyesight (she was certified blind in her early twenties) meant she had to master first typewriter and then computer. More than three hundred of their letters have survived, providing a rare and deeply moving insight into a long-standing female friendship
