Beijing opera is a form of theatrical performance that gives equal weight to singing and choreographed acting, from which it derives its unique style. Quite unlike Western stage performances, Beijing opera distinguishes itself by its ubiquitous use of song and dance in the broad sense to express the inner feelings and aspirations of its characters, even in its dialogue. All physical movements, large or small, simple or intricate, are, without exception, executed as dance.
